Winningham was bornon16th May 1959 in Phoenix, Arizona, and raised in Northridge, California with her three brothers and one sister. Her father works as a chairman of the Department of Physical Education at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and her mother were an English teacher and college counselor at Monroe High School.
She believes her first interest in acting to viewing an interview with Kym Karath (who played Gretl in The Sound of Music) on Art Linkletter’s television show House Party when she was five or six years old.
Winningham studied at Andasol Ave. Elementary School, she loves drama and playing the guitar and drums. So, She caught the extended drama option at Patrick Henry Junior High School and continued to study over her summer vacations at CSUN’s Teenage Drama Workshop. She graduated in co-valedictorian of her high school class in 1977.

Winningham began her 1980 feature movie debut in One Trick Pony, starring Paul Simon. Winningham performed a virginal young woman in St. Elmo’s Fire, a drama about a group of friends trying to find themselves post-college.regardind these film the-coming actors are Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Andrew McCarthy and Judd Nelson.
